Make Your Own Dry Ranch Dressing Mix

The inspiration for this Make your own Dry Ranch Dressing Mix recipe came from this one at Allrecipes.

You may be wondering……. Why would anyone want to take the time to make their own Dry Ranch mix? I mean the generic packets cost about 99 cents. So why bother?

I’ll tell you why: MSG (Monosodium glutamate). My body doesn’t like it in large quantities and the premade dip mixes are full of it. MSG is everywhere, so eliminating it is nearly impossible, but reducing it is doable.

If you want more info about MSG and it’s side effects you can look here and here.

Dry Ranch Dressing Mix

Mix together the following

2 teaspoons of dried parsley flakes
3/4 teaspoon of ground black pepper
2 teaspoons garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 to 1 teaspoon of dill weed to taste
1 1/2 Tablespoons of powdered Buttermilk

I always get questions about the dry Buttermilk when I share this recipe with others.

I use this one (affiliate link)

This recipe equals about two store bought envelopes of dry ranch dressing mix. Be sure to store any unused portion in an airtight container.

To use as a Salad Dressing

Add 1 Tablespoon of Dry Ranch Mix to

  • 1/3 cup of mayonnaise
  • 2 or 3 Tbsp of sour cream or plain yogurt (optional)
  • 1/4 cup milk cup of milk.

Mix well, chill for at least one hour and serve.

To use as a Dip for Veggies or Chips

Mix 16 ounces of sour cream or plain yogurt with 1/4 cup of mayonnaise. Then stir in Dry Ranch Dressing Mix to taste. I usually use about 2 TBSP

We use this Dry Ranch Dressing Mix in lots of recipes too. I will be featuring some of them in future posts. If you don’t want to miss them, be sure and subscribe.

  1. thank you so much!
i am not just sensitive to msg, but know that I have a full blown allergy. Ingesting small quantities makes me ill enough to visit the emergency room, sometimes multiple visits, and lays me low for days and sometimes weeks. I recently read 1/4 tsp cream of tarter dissolved in 8 ounces of water will negate the effect of msg once ingested. Also, large quantities of water does reduce the impact of the msg.
Finding your recipe for ranch dressing mix just makes my day!

  4. I made this tonight. Love it! I quadrupled the recipe so we have it made in advance and substituted half of the garlic salt for garlic powder because it was slightly too salty for us. Thanks for sharing! Will be our go-to ranch recipe now.
